Brookwood High School is one step closer to its new, upgraded athletics facility, as school and city leaders hosted a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday.

In September, Brookwood High received $18.2 million from the Tuscaloosa County Board of Education for a major athletics makeover. It’s been a long time coming, because Brookwood has been playing out of its current stadium since the 1940s.

The new facility will feature new locker rooms, workout equipment and a brand-new football stadium with concession stands.

Brookwood High Principal Kellie Hubbard said the new facility will be great for the community.

“There’s a lot of emotions and I am overwhelmed with excitement and happiness,” said Hubbard.

Brookwood Mayor Joe Barger said he is excited to see the Panthers take the field this year.

“We are looking forward, first of all, to having a Friday night football game in our new stadium, to turn the lights on and light up the whole community,” said Barger.

Brookwood High head football coach Mike Bramblett was at the groundbreaking and said his players will respect the new facility because of what they have already been through.

“Our facilities are in real bad shape and we have done everything we could to make them the best we could possibly make,” Bramblett said. “We have also stressed the idea that we are not gonna let that be a limiting factor for us. We got new facilities coming, and we are gonna work to build this program, regardless of the facilities that we have right now.”
